Welcome to our new school year!

I am so excited to be your students' teacher this year and look forward to meeting you soon. While we may face some challenges this school year, your help always leads to their success. Please contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

¡Bienvenidos a nuestro nuevo año escolar! Estoy muy emocionada de ser la maestra de sus estudiantes este año y espero conocerlos pronto. Si bien es posible que enfrentemos algunos desafíos este año escolar, su ayuda siempre los lleva al éxito. Por favor, póngase en contacto conmigo si tiene alguna pregunta o inquietud.

Periods 1: English 10SEI-

We will be hard at work this year!

We’ll:

* Learn about culture & what defines our own cultural identity

* Develop an understanding of diversity and analyzed the similarities & differences in cultural traditions, beliefs, foods, music, language, and values of certain countries

* Analyze various poems and works including the art of Frida Kahlo

* Research & Analyze social issues which impact our communities and raised awareness by presenting our findings on issues like education, lack of access to healthcare, food insecurity, drug abuse, homelessness and others

* Write to our local elected officials (mayor, senators, congresspeople) letting them know how important it is for them to help our communities

* Read Night by Elie Wiesel & Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe and learn about how history impacts culture and literature

* Hear a Holocaust survivor speak about his/her experience during WWII

* Analyze our transcripts and learn about what courses are available to us next year

* Learn about the importance of effort & success

 

What we will do in the second semester:

* Learn about how cultures are connected & affected globally

* Research environmental issues and how they impact our communities

* Analyze digital and informational texts, including documentary films produced by activists like Leonardo DiCaprio (The 11th Hour & Ice on Fire)

* Compile our Research to Raise awareness about these issues

* Create a website featuring to raise awareness and to show how our community can help us be advocates for change

* Prepare for AP Language and/or English 11

Period 2 & 4: AVID Junior Seminar (AVID 11)

This year we will:

* Write our 8 Personal Insight Questions (PIQ's) in preparation for next years UC Application period.

* Research the pathways to college including both public and private colleges & universities

* Learn about the cost & benefits of college as well as how to finance our future

* Analyze our A-G requirements & kept track of our progress

* Create an account & started our Common App

* Hear from a variety of guest speakers including our SV alumni & AVID Tutors

* Collaborate during tutorials and improved our listening & speaking skills including our grades in various subjects

* Build confidence and a community with one another

* Practice academic discourse in Socratic Seminars in both AVID 11 & with AVID 12

* Learn about (& how to cope with) stress & anxiety

* Help our community through various community service projects which include helping the homeless, tutoring middle school students & raising awareness about important issues.

* Have fun!

* Attend a college field trip

Period 5 & 7: Chicanx Literature (Dual Language Pathway)

What we will do this school year:

* Read Bless Me Ultima, Pocho, Zoot Suit, & Borderlands: La Frontera

* Have academic discussions about relevant issues that impact our educational experience

* Develop our critical thinking, speaking & listening skills in preparation for our future

* Research social issues that impact our communities

* Help our community through various community service/advocacy projects which include helping the homeless, tutoring/mentoring middle school students & raising awareness about important issues like equity in education, access to health care & environmental education

* Analyze our A-G requirements & kept track of our progress

* Apply to various scholarships

* Plan events to bring our community together (Dia de los Muertos & Posada)

* Build confidence & community with one another

* Attend a cultural field trip

* Obtain our District Recognition (pending grad check/eligibility)

* Earn our state Seal of Biliteracy (pending eligibility)
