AP Drawing

This is a college level drawing course that has been developed to accommodate students who have expressed an interest in completing the AP Drawing Portfolio.  Student who enroll in this class should possess a mastery of artistic ability and technique, have previously excelled in a lower level art course, and/or seek approval from Ms. Nelson based on their drawing portfolio and overall artistic ability.  Students will be expected to draw many hours each week outside of class time and they should be sure they have time in their schedules to accommodate this time demand.  Emphasis is placed on the production on all three sections of the AP Drawing Portfolio:  Quality, Breadth, and Concentration.  Units of study are presented to satisfy the Breadth requirements of the portfolio. Through individual conferencing, students are assisted and challenged in the development of their Concentration work for the portfolio.  Students will be expected to develop mastery in concept, composition and execution of ideas.

Commercial Art 1

This year long course is designed to provide students with a firm foundation in many digital and commercial art areas.  The use of art related technology is infused into all projects.  Students will learn to use the computer and digital cameras as art tools.  Students will primarily work in Adobe Creative Cloud Illustrator and Photoshop, and be introduced to additional programs such as Premier, and Animate.  Learning these programs provides students with skills necessary to enter the commercial art job market or continue on to post secondary education.  Major units of study include:

Graphic Design

Computer Illustration

Digital Imaging / Photography

Film and Video

Multimedia

Animation

This course is a designated Digital Arts Pathway course.  Students who complete a specified sequence of art courses with a grade of C or better are eligible to receive a certificate of pathway completion. By completing a pathway sequence students are building a foundation of skills, knowledge, and experience that will enhance, and accelerate their future digital/commercial arts career goals.  Students who do well in this course are encouraged to continue on to Digital Arts 2and/or AP Studio Art: 2-D Design.

Commercial Art 2

This course has been developed to accommodate students who have expressed an interest in completing a Digital Arts Portfolio. Through direct teacher instruction, emphasis is placed on the production of all three sections of the Digital Arts II Portfolio:  Quality, Breadth, and Concentration.  In the Breadth section teacher directed units of study are presented to satisfy the requirements of the breadth section of the portfolio. In the concentration section students are challenged to develop their own personal work. Through individual conferencing students are assisted in the development of their Concentration. Students will develop a portfolio of college-level drawings that show evidence of mastery in concept, composition, and execution.

In constructing the portfolio students learn how to seek out creative problems that are interesting and challenging and use goal setting, informed decision making and problem solving skills to pursue their own artistic interest in an informed way.  Students are responsible for demonstrating mastery at using the elements of art to organize the principles of design in their work.  All students enrolled this course must research their ideas for their independent projects and document this in the sketchbook journal. Through goal setting, students are guided in setting challenging but attainable creative goals for projects. Students utilize standards set for the class which they use to gauge their progress.  These standards are based on the state course expectations.

AP2D
AP Two-Dimensional Design is a year-long capstone course to the Design, Visual, and Media Arts pathway.  In this course, students will gain an in depth understanding of technology platforms as they relate to the arts. Students will use digital design tools, (i.e. Photoshop, Illustrator, digital cameras), incorporate techniques and methods common to careers in graphic arts, photography, and digital art production. Through the completion of coursework as assigned in each unit, students will gain knowledge of: art and copy creation, graphic design, production photography, graphic reproduction processes, binding and/or finishing related to digital imaging, digital printing, and digital production.  These units of study are presented to build upon previously learned skills and techniques. Through individual conferencing, students are assisted in the development of a concentration series of work focusing around a common theme and personal artistic style.
