AVID
Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an academic elective course that prepares students for college and career readiness and success, and it is scheduled during the regular school day as a year-long course. Each week, students receive instruction utilizing a rigorous college preparatory curriculum provided by AVID Center, tutor-facilitated study groups, motivational activities, and academic success skills. In AVID, students participate in activities that incorporate strategies focused
on writing, inquiry, collaboration, organization and reading (WICOR) to support their academic growth. Ultimately, our goal is to help students build a bridge that helps them to move from high school straight into a four-year university (either CSU, UC, or private) or to vocational training programs.
Does AVID meet UC/CSU A-G requirements? YES!!
Students earn G elective credit for every year in AVID Seminar, starting in the 9th grade year.
Why should you join AVID?
Students should take AVID for several reasons. First, we are a program whose primary goal is to prepare and guide students towards entering a four-year college or university right after graduating from high school. That is our core mission, and we take tremendous pride in helping all AVID students to make their college dreams a reality. Secondly, AVID is a family and we believe in all our students belonging to an organization that is bigger than just one individual. We emphasize a sense of community that goes beyond the classroom and that feeling is what bonds all of us together during and after high school. AVID is a program that goes beyond the classroom by exposing students to college through not only campus visits as well as weekend road trips that take students to universities outside of the Los Angeles area, but also through service to our communities when we complete community service projects. Ultimately, AVID strives to guide students towards a college education and to ensure that they have all the tools and skills needed for academic success in their college and career pathways and beyond.
ALL students MUST apply and go through the interview process prior to enrollment. Any student who qualifies for AVID will be enrolled in AVID 9/10/11 Seminar. Students must be admitted into the AVID program by 11th grade in order to be eligible for AVID 12 and by 10th grade in order to be eligible for AVID Senior Seminar and other Senior Honors.
