High School Athletes Power Through Spring Season

Spring sports at Baldwin Park and Sierra Vista High School wrapped up with a mix of victories and commendable efforts.

At Baldwin Park High, four students—Julio Lopez, David Evangelista, Jonathon Evangelista, and Eduardo Frausto—from the boys' track and field team made it to CIF after placing in the 4x400-meter relay race at league finals. The girls' stunt team is celebrating their first league championship win after a successful season, finishing with a 7-1 record. Additionally, five senior student-athletes—Marissa Ariza, Celeste De La Cueva, Jasmine Flores, Eduardo Frausto, and Corey Lacy—were recognized by the Mt. Baldy 5 reception for outstanding achievement on and off the field. Despite not reaching CIF, student-athletes in baseball, softball, swimming, tennis, and badminton showed determination throughout their season.

“The girls' stunt team practiced for hours after school perfecting routines and mastering new skills! They were unbreakable,” Baldwin Park High girls' stunt team coach Starr Sanchez said.

Over at Sierra Vista High, both baseball and softball achieved co-league championship titles and made it to CIF playoffs. The softball team hosted Capistrano Valley, and the baseball team hosted Desert Christian for the first round of CIF playoffs. The boys' and girls' track and field teams also clinched the undefeated league champion title. In the Montview League finals, 13 girls earned medals, with eight earning first place, five second place, and five third place. The boys' track and field team also achieved many medals, including eight first place, seven second place, and six third place. Seventeen track and field runners, jumpers, and throwers qualified for CIF finals. The boys' volleyball team earned the Montview League champion title but was defeated in the first round of playoffs against Rio Hondo Prep. The badminton team made their way to the playoffs. The boys' and girls' swim teams had a strong season, earning over 20 medals in league finals. Six swimmers advanced to CIF, and Steven Olvera broke league records and placed fifth in both of his events at CIF finals. Along with Baldwin Park High School, the Dons girls' stunt team also achieved their first-ever league title after defeating La Puente High School.

“This win is an exciting victory for SVHS and the school community,” Sierra Vista High School athletic director Robyn Reclusado-Garcia said.

Both the Dons and Braves athletic teams end the season with pride and determination.
